About this Page

UCSC Library staff arranging for online services and resources may be asked to provide network designations as a means of identifying appropriate users. This document lists the different schemes, in order of our preference, with an explanation of features and considerations for each.

Domain Name - ucsc.edu

This is the most inclusive and flexible designation for campus users. It includes all nodes in campus buildings (128.114.x.x subnet), plus the Residential Network (resnet) (169.233.x.x) and the CruzNet wireless network (169.233.x.x). It will also encompass future changes in how the campus defines "on-campus" users.

Proxy Server (Remote Access)

This is the IP Address of the Proxy Server, which is used to validate remote users.

  • 128.114.163.7 - oca.ucsc.edu
  • 128.114.238.29 - Sluglink (discontinued)

Subnet IP#

For vendors that require IP number designations, these numbers identify the four (to be seven) subnets that constitute the UCSC campus. There is essentially no difference between this method and #1 except that it does not as readily allow for changes.

  • 128.114.*.* campus proper
  • 169.233.*.* resnet
  • 169.233.*.* CruzNet wireless
(Note: The campus Internet Slug Service Provider service (ISSP) was discontinued effective April 30, 2001.)

One Subnet IP#

128.114.x.x campus proper

If for some reason a vendor requires an IP# designation but allows only one entry, use the main campus IP# above. This includes both libraries, and all classrooms and offices.

Library Buildings Only

  • 128.114.162.x McHenry
  • 128.114.163.x McHenry
  • 128.114.238.x McHenry
  • 128.114.239.x McHenry
  • 128.114.241.x McHenry
  • 128.114.143.x Science
Staff and public users physically within either McHenry or Science Libraries.

Other Campus Buildings/Servers/Subnets

We can specify other campus locations as needed.

Single Stations

We can also pinpoint individual workstations if the vendor wishes to identify specific locations for access to their service. (Note: the campus is moving to a system where fewer stations have permanent addresses which would be required for this sort of authentication. We can have selected machines set up with permanent addresses as required.)

Individual User Status/Passwords

Passwords are necessary when users need access from non-campus (i.e. nodes not included in the ucsc.edu domain) locations. The campus does not provide any method of authenticating campus users when connecting remotely. Some online services require individual registration and passwords as a tracking tool. It is the most cumbersome method to implement and maintain and therefore least preferred.

Combinations

It is possible to use a mix of methods. For example, CDL uses #4, #5, and #7 for access to the proprietary A&I databases.
