The following chart attempts to clarify the access available to various online resources -- catalogs, indexes, and full-text journals -- through the University Library. Access privileges to these resources may be determined as much by the user's location (i.e., network location) as their status. A user at a workstation within a campus subnetwork may have ready access to a service, while the same user at another location may have no access or be required to furnish a password.

Locations

The main location categories are:

In-Library - in McHenry Library or Science Library
On-Campus - UCSC campus buildings, plus any station connected to the CATS backbone network, including;
- CATS modem pool - dial-in users
- RESNet - in-room residences network
Off-campus - any other location, including commercial Internet service providers (ISPs), such as CRUZIO, AOL, AT&T, regardless of user status.

Note that when access privileges are different for UCSC faculty, staff and students (indicated as "UCSC" below) than for other users ("other"), they are indicated separately below. For example, everyone using MELVYL within a Library has the same access, regardless of status, but only current UCSC faculty, staff and students may have passwords for remote access to some services.

Access Types

Access to online Library systems is available as follows:

open - no log-on or password required
password - authorized users are provided passwords; access is not available for others
proxy - campus users may use the Library proxy server ("SlugLink" see http://library.ucsc.edu/access/sluglink/) for off-campus access to some resources
not available - license or contractual agreements generally limit access to commercial services to UCSC-affliliated users or on-campus use; non-UCSC users may be able to use these services when on-campus only.
