UC/USC/SU English and American Literature Bibliographers
Meeting Report
Friday, June 5, 1998, UC-Riverside
Present: Reinhart Sonnenburg (UCSD), Convenor, Michaelyn Burnette (UCB),
Clinton Howard (UCD) (CDC liaison), Nancy Koller (UCR), Nancy Kushigian (UCD), Cathy
Palmer (UCI), Ray Soto (UCLA), Mark Stengel (UCSB)
Guests: John Reisman-Bloomberg (ESTC), Juliet McLaren (ESTC)

1. Agenda Review: The Agenda was followed in the order reported.

2. Welcome to New Members: We welcome Clinton Howard from UC-Davis as
our new CDC liaison (replacing David Farrell) and Mark Stengel, the (as yet temporary) Eng
and Am Lit Bibliographer from UCSB.

3. Round Robin Reports from members: Each member reported on significant
events, particularly those affecting collections in their own libraries.

ACTION ITEM: Ray Soto will send his British author list to each member of
the group.

4. Select a Recorder: We decided to assign recording duties
alphabetically by campus. Michaelyn (UCB) had already done the spring
meeting report, Nancy Kushigian (UCD) was leaving the country momentarily
so Cathy Palmer (UCI) will prepare the report for this meeting and Nancy
(UCD) will prepare the next one. Meeting report responsibilities will
follow this order:
UCB--done
UCI--this meeting
UCD
UCLA
UCR
UCSB
UCSC
UCSD
ACTION ITEM: Reinhart will send a corrected address list to everyone.

5. Cataloging of Electronic Items: Nancy Kushigian informed the group of
some issues concerning the recommendations made by HOTS concerning the
cataloging of electronic items. She raised questions about what
implications these recommendations had for the cataloging of electronic
monographic scholarly editions. What information do scholars and
librarians need about electronic scholarly editions?
The MLA (Modern Language Assn) has published a report on electronic
scholarly editions. Nancy will see if there is some way that the UC
groups can consider the recommendations of that report.

ACTION ITEM: After reviewing the report located at:

http://tpot.ucsd.edu/Cataloging/HotsElectronic/tfer.html

send questions or observations to Nancy (njkushigian@ucdavis.edu)

6. MLA Bibliography/CDL Issues: The group agrees that access to the MLA
bibliography through the MELVYL system has improved. However, the
functionality of the file is still limited. The MELVYL version does not
contain the Thesaurus and does not have the capability to link campus
holdings to bibliographic information.

ACTION ITEM: Reinhart will resurrect Margaret Gordon's letter to CFC
about MLA problems, acknowledging that access is better, but emphasizing
the desire for better functionality. He will send a draft of the letter
to the reflector and, when ready, the letter will be sent to Bev French at
the CDL.

7. ESTC: John Reisman-Bloomberg and Juliet McLaren gave an update of
activites on the English Short Title Catalog database. The ESTC now
includes 2000 serials records with a target of including about 5000.
Juliet McLaren is working on rare serials cataloging standards as part of
inputting this information.

8. CDL Issues: The group was interested in discussing how the CDL would
solicit input on electronic resources that are of benefit to Humanities
Scholars. Clinton Howard suggested that we begin to develop a list of
projects and products that we felt were priorities so that we could be
able to respond quickly if and when asked for input. He also urged us not
to wait to be asked but to share ideas once we had developed a list we
felt comfortable with. In terms of UC's Digital Library, we need to
consider which content we will purchase and which content we will create.
To create content, first we identify the strengths of the literature
collections at UC. Then we come up with well-defined projects that would
allow us to make those collections available in a digital format.

An example of a project that is already in place is Nancy Kushigian's
British Women Romantic Poets
http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/English/BWRP/

We started brainstorming a list of possible projects:
**Digitize the Temperance Literature collections in the UC libraries
**Digitize Slave Narratives held by UC Libraries
** " California narratives
** " Manuscripts
** " small press literary materials prior to 1923. Create a search
engine for them.
** " Poole's

We identified some commercially available products:
**Periodicals Contents Index
**HarpWeek
**Gale products such as the DLB
**system-wide access to OED
** " " " to Dissertation Abstracts
**American Periodicals Series Indexes
**English Periodicals Index

ACTION ITEM: Reinhart will communicate the essence of our conversation to
Beverly French, including the project ideas and the list of commercially
available resources. Please send any other ideas to Reinhart or to the
reflector or both.

9. Union List Project/Serials Related Topics: There was not support for
creating a UC Union List of literature and literary journals.

10. Collaboration/Communication: We did agree to use the reflector to
communicate about serials cancellation projects, including lists of titles
cancelled.
RECOMMENDATION: Make more active use of the reflector to communicate
about serials cancellations, new serials requests and expensive item
purchases.

11. Next Meeting: UC Davis agreed to host our next meeting in November.
Reinhart will continue to act as convenor through that meeting.
