HIS 121B, History of the Modern World (Burke), has its annual Africa map quiz coming up. Students need to be able to identify rivers, mountains, cities, etc. They should be able to use any world atlas (G 1019-1021) to do the assignment. I tell them if they can't find a geographic feature, come back and we'll give them a geographical dictionary (G 103's) in which they can look it up and get clues as to its location. Also, the Columbia Gazetteer Online is an option for more info.
A SJSU student is writing a history paper on this. See the book "Chinese Gold: The Chinese in the Monterey Bay Region", F 870 C5 L92 1985, which includes several maps.
See "List of Maps" pg ix in the front.
Clark's Monterey County Place Names also has brief information.
The Chinese fishing villages disappeared after about 1912.
